Genius, real genius, is often associated with humanitarianism. The desire to make the world a better place. The deep caring for the human race as a whole.

This is because cruelty stems from ignorance, and while ignorance is not stupidity, they are often kissing cousins. Cruelty is stupid. Responding to cruelty with further cruelties is stupid. But stupidity is like an infectious disease. All humans develop it at one time, everyone shows the symptoms. With some it is a terminal illness. With some it is a virus that comes and goes. But it happens to everybody, and it's forgivable. It's simply important to remember that it is a disease, and thus, something that should be fought, along with the cruelty that it inevitably breeds.
